ITOPF attends workshop in Zanzibar

Franck Laruelle attended a regional workshop on managing emergency preparedness and response in Zanzibar from 16th to 20th October 2017. The workshop, funded by UNEP and the Norwegian Oil for Development Programme, was organised under the auspices of the Nairobi Convention which provides a mechanism for regional cooperation, coordination and collaborative actions in the East Africa / West Indian Ocean region.

The workshop was attended by 29 country delegates from the Union of Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania (including the Zanzibar semi-autonomous administration), South Africa and Uganda, as well as representatives from IMO, IOC, the Nairobi Convention and the Norwegian Coastal Administration. The main focus of the event was on national contingency planning and regional cooperation. ITOPF presented on the basic features of a contingency plan, the tiered response concept illustrated with case studies, oil spill response options, and liability and compensation.
