Sao Tome & Principe

Spill Notification Point

There does not appear to be any designated spill notification point. The principal port of Sao Tome operates a radio station although it is irregularly manned and is partially inoperative.

Competent National Authority

There are no government agencies which have direct responsibility for oil pollution.

Response Arrangements

Sao Tome and Principe imports only non-persistent oil products transported in 200-litre drums. The risk of a major pollution incident is therefore slight.

Response Policy

No response policy has been formulated.

Equipment

Government & Private

There is no specialised clean-up equipment. Any response would involve manual clean-up.

Previous Spill Experience

The east coast of Sao Tome lies within the main tanker route to and from Angola and Gabon. The shorelines are occasionally polluted with residual oil thought to have originated from the tank washings of passing tankers.
