Dr Nicola Beer joined ITOPF in 2011. She is a Chartered Biologist and a Member of the Royal Society of Biology and Marine Biological Association, with a degree in marine biology and a PhD in marine science. Her doctoral research investigated the ecology and management of a commercially important but understudied reef fish in the New Zealand fjords.
 
Nicola has attended on site at a range of incidents in Europe, Asia, Australasia and North America, involving a wide range of oils and other cargoes. In addition to her on site work, she has also undertaken contingency planning and advisory work for government and industry, and contributed to a wide variety of workshops, training courses and international conferences.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining ITOPF, Nicola worked as a consultant benthic ecologist conducting environmental impact assessments for aggregate extraction, harbour dredging and offshore energy developments, and fisheries stock assessments. She coordinated the marine environmental and fisheries monitoring and mitigation commitments for the London Gateway Port Project, and contributed to the biodiversity and biosecurity monitoring programme in the remote Fiordland region of New Zealand, a UNESCO World Heritage Area and National Park. Following her PhD, Nicola was funded to conduct a review of the conservation status of North Atlantic coastal lagoons, a threatened habitat under increasing pressure from anthropogenic and climatic stressors.
